OLD GROWTH HEMLOCK TREES

This and other old growth legacy trees found in this timber sale are probably hundreds of years old, and left behind when this forest was selectively logged in the early 20th century.  Old growth trees are distinguished by their size, lack of branch stubs, and presence of epicormic branches on the upper stem.

Dear Mr. Wisch,

In March, Hilary Franz made a promise to protect forests that are nearing old growth on state forestlands.  The "Green Thomas" timber sale would include the logging of old growth legacy trees that are close to five feet in diameter and nearly 200 years old.  These are some of the last old growth trees that remain standing in the hills overlooking the lower Columbia River.  In addition, this misguided timber sale would destroy hundreds of large, century-old fir trees and many acres of structurally complex forest that may provide critical habitat for many species of concern that depend on older, interior forest habitat.

DNR's Policy for Sustainable Forests dictates that the conservation of biodiversity is a "fundamental guiding principle" of forest management.  This timber sale and others like it will irreparably degrade the biodiversity of the region, and undermine the objectives and intent of DNR's multispecies conservation strategy.  I urge you to cancel the Green Thomas timber sale.

Thank you for listening.
